What It Means to Be a Mentor

Mentorship is more than offering advice—it’s about building relationships, sharing wisdom, and encouraging growth in others. Over the years, I’ve mentored many young people, but one relationship that holds a special place in my heart is with my mentee, Michelle.

Michelle came into my life when she was still in primary school. Now, as she prepares to graduate high school next year, our mentorship journey continues to evolve. She aspires to be a lawyer, and most of our mentorship dates involve her shadowing me in court. However, this holiday season, we decided to step out of our usual routine and try something creative.

Michelle’s older sister, a talented jewelry maker, joined us for the day. She taught my daughters, their two friends, and me the art of jewelry-making, transforming a simple day at home into a memorable learning experience. While they crafted, I cooked and baked for everyone, and the shared moments of learning and laughter reminded me of the deeper meaning of mentorship. I later joined them to make my own beautiful pieces!

What Mentorship Is

Mentorship isn’t confined to career advice. It’s about empowering someone to navigate life’s challenges, explore their potential, and discover their strengths. It’s about being present, sharing experiences, and creating a space where growth and connection thrive.

What to Look for in a Mentor

If you’re seeking a mentor, here are key qualities to consider:

  1. Experience and Knowledge: Look for someone with expertise in areas you want to grow in.
  2. Empathy and Patience: A good mentor listens, understands, and offers guidance without judgment.
  3. Commitment: A mentor should be invested in your growth and willing to dedicate time to your journey.
  4. Alignment of Values: Choose someone whose values resonate with yours and who inspires you to be your best self.

Final Thoughts

“Mentoring is not about making people like you but about helping them become the best version of themselves.”

David Stoddard

Mentorship is a two-way street. While I aim to inspire and guide my mentees, they inspire me just as much with their resilience, curiosity, and drive. Whether it’s making jewelry or discussing court cases, every moment shared is a testament to the beauty of mentorship.

Here’s to creating meaningful connections and building brighter futures in 2025!
